It is eventually discovered that many of the other races in the game such as the Iberon, Godan, and Toluen, were genetically-altered humans adapted to conform to specific climates. Representing the humans of the far-future, your Solarian Empire must recover these Tears through diplomacy, trade, and war. Solarian Federation – Legend tells of four "Tears" (Data Crystals) strewn across the galaxy by your ancestors that have the power to make the Human race invincible, including resurrecting their dead leader. His orders - to eliminate all other races from the galaxy, and bring their heads to him!
As Imperator, your objective is to do whatever is necessary to appease your God-Emperor. Kra'hen Empire – As part of a brutal and bloodthirsty race, your race has a fetish for collecting the heads of your enemies (as soon will be revealed in the gameplay videos) and is entering the galaxy occupied by the other seven races in the game. Each race has different objectives in their respective campaigns, and the player can only win the campaign by meeting these dynamic goals or conquering the galaxy by eliminating all other factions. Instead, what is featured is several scenarios pitting one Empire against another, and the main campaign, where the player can choose one of three factions: The Kra'hen Empire, The Shinari Republic, or The Solarian Federation. The story of Imperium Galactica II is not entirely linear. The game is notable for its innovative menu UI and its inclusion of ground battles, space battles, and a detailed city-building mechanic within a single 4X title. Gameplay involves managing colonies, expanding one's empire, conquering enemy planets, researching, diplomacy with other races, spying, space battles, ground battles and more.
The North American release is the final game to be released under the GT Interactive brand name, released shortly before Infogrames folded the label into its own studio in May 2000. It is the sequel to Digital Reality's previous game, Imperium Galactica. At last! A distant-future strategy game with a halfway believable premise.Imperium Galactica II: Alliances is a video game featuring aspects of real-time tactics, real-time strategy and 4X elements from the Hungarian-based studio Digital Reality in 1999. If that alone were enough, then I'd say run out and buy Imperium Galactica. Alas, it takes a good deal more to really make a game in this genre. Consider the undertaking, though: a real-time strategy game coupled with a Civilization-style mission and scope. Then consider how many games in just one of those genres come up short. No wonder Imperium Galactica ultimately fails. But in the process, it deserves some accolades and perhaps the attention of the true diehards in the take-over-the-known-universe crowd.
I say that Imperium Galactica fails because I have played the likes of the original Master of Orion and Star Control 2, and I know that to follow in those footsteps and succeed would require something to match the awesome depth of those titles while at the same time retaining their simplicity of play.
Imperium Galactica does not do this for two basic reasons: 1) by placing so much emphasis on lengthy and laborious colony building and micromanagement, it necessitates a margin for player error and survivability that simply is not there and 2) rather than allowing for a free-flowing player-directed game, Imperium Galactica insists on breaking in every 5 minutes to give you a new directive - save this colony, rescue that ship, etc., so there is never a real feeling of being in control - it's really more like a deep-space civil servant sim at times.
